Mr. Macario “Mackay” Deauna Averilla, a retired executive from a Philippine Telco company, was an active bike packer from Santa Rosa City. When not bike packing around the country, his pastime would still be biking from his house to Tagaytay and back, almost a 17-kilometer distance. As of 2023, his bike packing already brought him to the Northern Luzon loop twice.
He was preparing for his third bike loop trip when he experienced a mild stroke in September 2023. Being an active biker, he thought he already recovered after his stay at the hospital. Without the follow-up with his doctor and the advice to regularly have medical check-ups, he immediately went back to being an active biker, because he felt fit and well. However, on one occasion in October 2023, before leaving the house for another bike trip, he experienced all the signs of STROKE – weakness in his left arm, face dropping, and slurred speech. His family immediately brought Mackay to The Medical City (TMC) South Luzon. This time, the effect was not mild.
After hospitalization, he was using a wheelchair, but this lasted only for 3 weeks. He underwent Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation seriously at TMC South Luzon and can now walk with a cane. He continues to do his physical therapy at TMC South Luzon up to the present.
He was very thankful to TMC South Luzon’s staff for the care and support in his treatment and recovery, and to everyone from the moment he entered the facility including security guards, doctors, nurses, and Physical Therapists until he left the facility. He considered them now as a family.
This life-changing experience led Mackay to mellow down, take it slow, and appreciate nature. His advice to other patients is to consult with their doctors regularly to prevent the worsening of any condition, eat healthy, and exercise.
